Abraham stood yet before the Lord
Genesis 18:22
As Sodom's cry unto God arose
His angels dispached on a mission of woes,
To mark the sin of the evil horde,
But Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
The Lord hid not His urgent plan
But spoke to the face of a faithful man
Who commanded his house and kept God's Word,
And Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
God's fearful wrath was soon to rain,
Hurling deadly brimstone and with fiery pain,
Destroying these cities by God abhorred,
But Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
Every sodomite man and woman and child
Who perverted God's way and their bodies defiled,
And all who approved or gave silent accord-
But Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
Corrupted society; sin is the norm,
And he seems as a mocker who seeks to warn
His family and world, of judgment in store-
But Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
But what was he doing, this man of faith?
What gripped his thoughts, what held his gaze?
Stedfast, unmovable, without growing bored,
As Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
His priestly mission to interceed
Conscience constrained, every word and deed,
In humility and boldness his heart was outpoured,
As Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
Seeing sinner and saint in terror's path,
Seeing God of mercy, and God of wrath;
How earnestly, fervently, he implored!
As Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
Effectual prayers from a righteous son,
Holy Ghost birthed, have pardon won.
For the Father's heart turned – mercy's restored,
As Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
But how great the labor, hard the strife
How focused the soul, devoted the life,
To win spiritual victories, wielding the sword,
As Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
Oh for a heart, God's burdens to feel,
Oh, highest of callings, before Him to kneel-
Yea, how great the promises- sweet the reward,
As Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
