Last Days Poetry
Day of Judgment! Day of Wonders!
by John Newton; modifications and additional verses by Jordan Fraker (elder)
Day of judgment, day of wonders!
Hark! the trumpet's awful sound,
Louder than a thousand thunders,
Shakes the vast creation round!
How the summons
Will the sinner's heart confound!
Boldly Bab’lon’s army gathered
With the Lamb of God to war
All His strivings they contemning
Think Him weak as once before
Sore mistaken
Then the rebels hear Him roar
Strength and heart from all is fleeing
With the most from their place
Heav’ns enflamed before His coming
Hearts abased before His rage
With one breath He
Bowed the beast’s unbended knee
Fallen angel hosts still trembling
Rise their immortal foe to meet
Burning, in His ire pleading
Judging those who sought His seat
Careless sinner
What will then become of thee?
Seeking for the rocks and mountains
Idols you will cast away
Thrusting from you all once treasured
Madly calling death your aid
Desp’rate to e–scape
His dreadful angry gaze
His own Son by saints entreat you,
That you timely warning take,
But His word in time, will seize you,
Plunge you in the burning lake:
Think, poor sinner,
Thy eternal all's at stake!
See the Judge our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty divine!
You who long for his appearing
Then shall say, "This God is mine!"
Gracious Savior,
Own me on that day for thine!
At his call the dead awaken,
Rise to life from earth and sea;
All the powers of nature shaken
By his look, compelled to flee:
By constraint you’re
Brought before Thy God to meet!
Horrors past imagination,
Will surprise your trembling heart,
When you hear your condemnation,
"Hence, accursed wretch depart!
Thou with Satan
And his angels, have thy part!"
But to those who have confessed,
Loved, and served the Lord below;
He will say, "Come near ye blessed,
See the kingdom I bestow:
You for ever
Shall my love and glory know."
Under sorrows and reproaches,
May this thought our courage raise!
Babylons defeat approaches,
‘Midst the furnace declare His praise:
He shall triumph
And the world shall know His Name!
