Poetry by Jake Gardner (Elder)
The Scene of Surrender
Teach to me His fear aright,
Not in precepts dark as night -
I would be saved, what must I do?
"The book is sealed, mine eyes are shut."
SCENE OF SURRENDER, SO MILDLY PUT.
(viz. Isa. 29:9-14; Acts 2:37; 8:30,31)
So they thrust with side, with shoulder,
Till the flock's a little older,
Then when weak, they RAPE and ROB…
Pain so keen, like a punch to the gut:
SCENE OF SURRENDER, SO MILDLY PUT.
(viz. Ezek. 34)
When will we wake - on swaying mast?!
(Fancied we held our footsteps fast)
Lulled to sleep by captain's orders;
And with conviction, lost sure foot -
SCENE OF SURRENDER, SO MILDLY PUT.
(viz. Prov. 23:34; Eph. 5:14)
"In our father's house we're safe and sound" -
But as untimely figs cast to the ground,
Our comfort, peace, our hope and joy,
Before our eyes they line and SHOOT:
SCENE OF SURRENDER, SO MILDLY PUT.
(viz. Luke 15:11-32; Rev.6:13)
As Samson's head willingly was laid -
In whorish lap, undismayed he played -
So likewise with comfortable release,
We have given to them our locks to cut:
SCENE OF SURRENDER, SO MILDLY PUT.
(viz. Jdg. 16:15-20)
The fight is over, our tears we've shed;
So willingly among the dead.
Our anthems lost in hosts of noise.
And our grave's-mouth sealed, the door is shut:
SCENE OF SURRENDER, SO MILDLY PUT.
(viz. Psa. 141:7; Prov. 21:16; Jer. 18:12)
SO MILDLY PUT, though rife with pain;
The reality is sharper, though I feign
With pen and ink the portrait paint:
The end of which I know not what…
SCENE OF SURRENDER, SO MILDLY PUT.
(viz. Jer. 5:31)
Not in precepts dark as night -
I would be saved, what must I do?
