PAUL
Acts 20:24 “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.”
The Apostle Paul had one thing in his heart and that was Jesus Christ and the spreading of the gospel no matter what the cost. This painting was my first painting as a Christian and what I remember was the amazing accounts of Paul being imprisoned and yet still rejoicing, still spreading the gospel and still so full of hope. The idea of denying oneself to the point of prison or death has since the point of salvation been a driving force in my walk with Christ, and the life of the Apostle Paul has been quite the encouragement. That is the hope in this painting, to promote that no matter the circumstance no matter the cost, we must go through with God. As Paul wrote here in Philippians 1:20-21 “according to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” In him we can see the life of Jesus manifested, this is what we ought to all strive for as Christian. He did this out of his great love for the lost and for the church, for they will know us by our love for one another. Let us therefore take heed to this call to obedience to our great King.

REDEMPTION
Ephesians 1:7-8 “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.”
The bible says, “for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.” We are slaves to this world, each one of us carried away and enticed by our own lust. The world is cold and hard, and the heart of man is very much the same. In those days, the bible says, the hearts of men will grow cold. Matthew 24:12 “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” The message behind this painting is the idea that as this man is drudging through this cold, cruel world, he is drawn to the saving arms of Christ through His church. The church in this painting represents Christ, for we are the body of Christ and are His representatives here on earth. The bible says that we are the light of the world, so let us shine brightly. My hope is that people might see this painting and through the power of the Holy Spirit identify with this concept and realize their need for a Savior. For without holiness no one shall see the Lord, so where will you reside for eternity? Jesus will free you from your chains, for all are bond in their sin, slaves to wickedness; yet while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. That whosoever believes in Him and follows Him shall be saved.
THE MESSAGE
Romans 2:3-16 says, “And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God. For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.”
One must understand that no one will escape the righteous judgment of God; for how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? The only way to escape the wrath of God is through His glorious Son, Jesus Christ. “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Know this, that He loves you so much, it is not His will that any should perish, but all come to repentance. And though all have sinned and broken Gods moral law, each of us deserving of death and hell, only those who have denied themselves, taken up their cross, and humbly followed Jesus Christ will be saved and be allowed to enter into the kingdom of heaven. For “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God,” “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” These are the words of Jesus, and His words are true.
This painting was made to let the world know of the saving power of the blood of Christ by showing contrast between the wages of sin, which is death and the glory that comes to all who believe in the One who died to set us free. Only through the blood of Jesus can we be made clean of our sins against a Holy God. For though our sins were as scarlet, they will be white as snow. I chose to include newspaper clippings in this painting to give the understanding of how in earnest sin is in this dying world, for there are a thousand roads leading to hell but only one leading to heaven; through the Lord Jesus Christ. For narrow is the way leading to life, for unless a man repent he will surely likewise perish. So confess your sins to God and repent, turn from your wicked ways and follow the One who is able to save your soul. Follow Jesus and make Him your Lord. For His Love was so great for you that He died for you and rose from the dead to set you free, and if the Son has set you free, you are free indeed. He will give you the gift of eternal life and fill you with His Holy Spirit and draw you into communion with Him, into a glorious relationship with God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit.
He doesn’t promise a wonderful pleasant life here on earth, for He says John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” In other words, your peace is in Him and not in the things of this world, for in this world He promises tribulation, but He has overcome the world and our victory is in Him and our reward is in heaven. But understand that in Him you can do all things according to His will and for His glory. But when His presence come into your heart truly, you won’t care for the things of this world, for all of it will go at presence of God, let Him consume your heart and draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.

COUNTING THE COST
Matthew 4:19 “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Mark 8:34-36 “And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
These are the words of Jesus as a challenge to those who say they wish to follow Him and believe in His Word. That is what this painting is conveying; the reality that without self-denial and taking up our cross daily we cannot be His disciples. The Christian life comes with obedience and much sacrifice, yet there is a gospel being preached in America that suggest otherwise. That we can accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and still keep living the way we are living. This painting is a sobering attempt to speak to the hearts of those who believe in the Lord and have been lied to saying that there is no price to pay, for the scripture says “know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” Yet somehow we still think we are our own, we have become bondservants of the Lord Jesus Christ, so we ought to serve Him through obedience to Him and His Word. The Christian walk is not always easy, but it’s always good. The Bible says “yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” We must be willing to serve Him whether by life or by death.

APATHY IN THE CHURCH
Ezekiel 3:17-19 “Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.”
This painting is pressing the idea that there is too much complacency in the Christian Church in America. We as Christians are not only doing ourselves a great disservice in our apathy but doing a great disservice to the world around us as well. The Bible promotes Christians to share their faith with those who are lost or otherwise abiding in the darkness. If we do not do our job as Christians in sharing Christ with a lost world, we fail and their blood is on our hands. So this painting is a cry to the church in America to wake up and face the giant that stands before us, we blame so many things for the moral decline in America, but I as a Christian blame the church. Jesus says in Revelations 3:15-16 that “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” I heard a preacher once say “I believe Christ weeps over words that follow concerning the church in America,” here mentioned in Matthew 5:13 “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” These are the staid words of a Christian who cares about the state of the church and the state of the world around them. My job is to sound the alarm; this is my intention, to raise the question, ‘there are thousands of people all around us dying without God and going to Hell, and what are we doing about it?’

MADE NEW
Ephesians 2:1-9 “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
John 3:3 says "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." This is the very essence of this painting, the second birth, born from above, without which we will not enter the kingdom of God. Jesus came to set us free from the slavery of this world of sin and death and the wrath to come in Hell, by dying on the cross and rising from the dead; that whoever believes in Him will live even if he dies. This is so beautiful, “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” You see “that which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Many will simply believe in Jesus (even the devil and his demons believe) but few are ever born again of the Spirit of God, for narrow is the way to eternal life. This painting represents the transition from death to life through the Lamb of God, the Lion of Judah, who shed His precious blood to set us free. The bible says we will be made white as snow, thus the figure in white. The Word also says in Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Thus the crucified man; you see, we must first die that we might be born again by the Spirit of the living God. Our old man passes away and we are made new in Christ, with a new mind and a new heart!

FRUITLESS LABORS
Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:”
One morning almost nine years ago, as I lay sick in bed at about 4:30 in the morning, I awoke to this startling image. I saw as if watching a movie this wonderful vision of all these people of every different vocation standing in this field. Yet they were not merely standing, some of them were plowing the field with hoes and pick axes; while others were sowing seed, yet there was no seed in their hands or their baskets. They all seemed to be just going through the motions. Those plowing were not getting anywhere; the field was dead. I knew the field would never produce any fruit or life, yet still there was hope. I saw on the horizon a great light as if it were just rising, yet it was not the sun for it was far to brilliant and beautiful; it was the Light of life. And as I saw in this vision these things, I heard as if someone was standing right next to me whispering into my ear. “This is the bane of your existence; this is the bane of human existence, fruitless labors that do not glorify Me.” I knew then that the Lord had spoken to me, and it was then that I decided to surrender my life to Christ and never look back, but pressing forward in order to glorify the great God who made me. The book of Ecclesiastes says, “What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?” Leonard Ravenhill once said, “Is what you’re livin’ for worth Christ dying for?” Everything is passing away and will return to dust, only what’s done for God with last on into eternity. For Isaiah 40:6-8 says, “The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” Thus I have painted this painting to remind the world of the fleeting nature of our lives and if we are not glorifying God, what are we doing? These are the poised words of king Solomon, “Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” So with all your doing in this life let your doing be for eternity and for Christ, for man is appointed once to die and then comes the judgment, so we better get it right the first time.

MERCY SEAT
Philippians 2:6-8 "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."
Mercy Seat is a painting that represents the tension of how this thrice-Holy God became humiliatingly common. He once sat upon a throne so holy that at any moment, angels would bow before Him to worship Him crying out “holy, holy, holy!” These celestial creatures are everlastingly worshipping Him with never ending praise, even as He condescended to this menial earth, never did they cease to worship this holy God. There is something we cannot quite understand about the holiness of God here in these bodies of flesh. He created all things and to Him and for Him and by Him are all things! And so God condescended to our low estate, becoming as a common man of no stately form and dying the death of a thief on a cross. In this piece, it must be understood that the mercy seat and the Ark of the Covenant are the very throne of God on earth, so holy that they are hidden behind the veil; all who entered would die with the exception of the high priest once a year to atone for the sins of the people. I deliberately made it a common thing, such as the chair you see before you with engraved cherubim wings and an old hanging lamp to bring light to the room. I did this in order that I might express the meaning of the scripture above and the humiliation of this holy King becoming as a servant. Can you imagine this great God, leaving His throne above just to become much lower than the angels, that He might display His great love toward us? I hope that as you consider this painting you will consider the great humiliation He endured just for you, and how he became common that He might glorify His holy Name.
